Looking up a quality component system is tough.
So many things have to be considered: how many drivers are there, the crossover arrangements, features for installation, power handling, impedance, efficiency rate and the list goes on.
And it often becomes impossible to keep the track of all these requirements.
Since we’re talking about a JBL system here, you can be sure that everything you’re looking for are gonna be indeed in their rightful place.
And if you’re not sure, see it for yourself!
Overview of JBL GTO609C Premium 6.5-Inch Component Speaker
Table Of Content
JBL GTO609C Premium Component Speaker System is a speaker of JBL’s high profile GTO series. It’s a 2-way component speaker system. It works with 90 watts RMS power and covers frequency response range of 53Hz-21kHz. The impedance is 3 ohms and follows 93 dB sensitivity.
This system is equipped with two tweeters, two woofers and two crossovers, to deliver full-range sound. It features 3/4 inch silk dome tweeter and 6-1/2 inch carbon-injected Plus One™ woofer (woofer cone to be precise) with rubber surround. A switch is included in the crossover for tweeter volume adjustment.
It uses voice coil with 3 ohms impedance to disperse powerful sound from low profile or aftermarket factory speaker. Crossover connections are deployed for accurate sound imaging.
JBL GTO609C Premium 6.5-Inch Component Speaker fits 6-1/2 inch opening accurately if the opening doesn’t include a bolt pattern. Since it’s a component system, the drivers have to be mounted individually. The tweeter can be either flash-mounted or surface mounted using patented I-mount system. Again, it has starfish brackets, as well, for mounting purpose.
To help you have a clear concept, the system’s main features are highlighted below.
Unlike most other automobile stereos, JBL GTO609C Premium 6.5-Inch Speaker System works with 3 ohms impedance, so the power handling may seem a little weak. However, this is not true for this system.
This system provides with 3 ohms impedance, but can handle a big amount of wattage. Its continuous (RMS) power handling capacity starts from 5 watts and can reach up to 90 watts. It holds 93 dB sensitivity for the certain RMS power handling rate.
What’s more powerful than 20kHz frequency response? 21kHz, of course. JBL GTO609C covers the majority of frequency response range with the limit of 53Hz to 21kHz.
This system is a typical 2-way system. It includes woofer and tweeter as sound producing drivers. However, you have to set them up individually. The system consists of two tweeters and two woofers. Two external crossovers are added to deploy crossover network.
Silk Dome Tweeter:
JBL GTO609C Premium 6.5-Inch Component Speaker System features 3/4 inch edge driven silk dome tweeter. Silk has been used to disperse sound, maintaining the tweeter’s spontaneous tone. It also maintains a warm vibe and reduces distortion.
The tweeter uses large voice coil to emit loud sound using less power. High power handling doesn’t affect the coil much since it’s oversized. The voice coil’s size is beneficial for excessive heat loss.
What’s more interesting, as we mentioned earlier, the voice coil’s impedance is not more than 3 ohms. Aftermarket and factory speakers with undersized wires can’t produce powerful sound with higher impedance. JBL GTO609C Premium 6.5″ Component Speaker System’s voice coil solves this problem with low impedance and it produces pretty rich and loud sound using shorter gauge.
The sound volume can be boosted for modern cars, all you gotta do is install an extra amp. Power handling rate and the provided sensitivity are capable of handling stronger waves.
Plus One™ Woofer Cone:
And here comes the most important component of the system: the woofer cone. This system features 6-1/2 inch carbon-injected Plus One™ woofer cone. Injected carbon makes it stiffer and more durable, even with powerful low waves. The cone is surrounded with butyl rubber, which makes the surround flexible and compact.
In one sense, it’s more beneficial than other woofer cones with similar opening fitting criteria. With new basket style, the cone surface is made wider. Large surface makes space for more air and produces accurate loud bass with great details.
Crossover network is always required in a component system to maintain the frequency’s originality. JBL GTO609C Premium 6.5-Inch Component Speaker System features two external crossovers to bring a balance between the pair of woofer cones and tweeters. These crossovers control frequencies by connecting spade connectors. Comes with screw terminal input and output.
You can control the tweeter’s sound level using the crossover. It features a switch for sound adjustment.
The system requires custom set up as it’s a component system.
The woofer is constructed with fiberglass-reinforced plastic frame, which allows convenient mounting even on a rough surface. It’s mainly built to fit 6-1/2 inch openings, but a few 6-3/4 inch openings work too. Metal brackets are featured for oversized openings.
You can install the tweeter in several ways. JBL GTO609C includes JBL’s patented I-Mount system, and starfish mounting brackets. You can either surface-mount or flush-mount the tweeter using the I-Mount system, where starfish brackets also allow behind-grille mounting.
The crossover ought to be mounted on the base.
- Its impedance and structure make it suitable for all standard car designs.
- The tweeter sound level can be adjusted using crossover system.
- Includes several convenient mounting options for each components.
- You can use it for aftermarket stereo.
- Delivers decent treble and bass.
- High sensitivity.
- The woofer alone can’t produce shaking bass due to low impedance.
- Additional amp is required to bring the sound to its highest level.
- Use of starfish bracket can be complicated.
